1. What is a Karaoke Machine Rental?
The best way to explain getting a karaoke machine rental for your party, is for you to picture when you’re home for the holidays during Thanksgiving. You and your loved ones are surrounding each other in the living room near the fireplace (feeling that turkey feast fullness and sleepiness) and then someone says: “I know, let’s do some karaoke!”
Cue the assembly of the karaoke equipment.
In the 80’s, you would have to go to a bar to utilize primitive karaoke equipment, that you couldn’t bring home - because it was bulky, and it didn’t belong to you.
In the 90’s and beyond, technology caught up and made home versions of karaoke equipment systems, with the use of CDs (remember those?).
In its simplest form, think of these early home karaoke equipment systems as a boombox about the size of your airport carry-on luggage bag, with a microphone attached to it.
Place that contraption near the fireplace (which now becomes your mock karaoke stage), get that weird uncle up there to sing his out-of-tune version of oldies, and you’ve got yourself a karaoke machine experience!
Today, if you search that very well-known website associated with a Brazilian rainforest (it rhymes with Bamazon), you’ll find hundreds upon hundreds of affordably priced karaoke machines on the market, coming in all shapes, colors, sizes (as seen pictured above).
If you don’t want to clutter your basement with a piece of gear you’ll only use once a year, then a quick internet search will help you find local karaoke machine rental providers - that essentially rent you those same machines on the internet at an hourly rate, but that you have to operate.
So, what good reason can we provide you to hire a professional karaoke DJ host, versus securing a karaoke machine rental?
Simple: just think back to that Thanksgiving scene with the weird uncle. (We’ll give you a moment.)
Yeah, we thought so. There’s a big difference between informal and formal; between casual and professional.
It’s the same reason people (for the most part) spend their hard-earned money to book banquet halls and event spaces for their very important celebrations (weddings, bar mitzvahs, corporate functions), instead of just holding it at their home.
It’s the same reason people still hire professional disc jockeys (DJs), like myself, instead of just plugging an iPod/iPhone/digital music player into a speaker and loading up a playlist.
A karaoke machine rental CANNOT replace the human experience of hiring a trained, professional, interactive Karaoke DJ Host that is a trained party event entertainer.
We get tons of calls from clients interested in a karaoke machine rental for their well-planned event. After a few minutes of explaining the pros and cons, they immediately see the value of hiring a karaoke DJ over obtaining a karaoke machine rental.
Think about it: if you're planning a party, do you really want to play host and entertainer? With all the million little things you already have to juggle, you really shouldn't be worrying about operating the karaoke machine rental - serving as the one main entertainment attraction for your guests. Simple party tip: keeps your guests well fed and entertained - always. After considering all that, most clients say to us, “No way Jeron Music, we’ll hire you instead!”
The value of hiring a karaoke DJ is having someone who takes care of all the physical logistics (equipment, set-up, operation, break-down), but more importantly, becomes part of your celebration’s entertainment - instrumental in engaging your guests and making them feel welcomed and encouraged in all the party’s enhancements (Karaoke DJ, Photo Booth Rental, dancing, singing, etc.). We'll delve more into that below.
2. Karaoke for Parties
Why do people want karaoke for parties? Simple: it’s FUN!
Keep reading to get a better idea of how a professional Karaoke DJ experience can help you transform YOUR party event into a memorable occasion they will rave about and share on social media.
We here at Jeron Music DJ, Karaoke, Photo Booth Rental, Live Music One Man Band Entertainment want you to avoid a boring event. You’ve seen the type: where guests sit in their chairs and play on their phones all night long.
Karaoke’s place in modern day society has taken a strong hold; not just in the private party event scene, but also in popular culture, too.
Unless you're an alien from outer-space; or a time-traveler from the year 1919 living amongst us (boggled by internet blogs like these and our obsession with selfies), then you should be no stranger to how karaoke has become a big part of entertainment and media.
And if you don't believe us, then just search YouTube for video clips of The Late Late Show with James Corden, and watch his popular recurring segment of Carpool Karaoke. And then you'll get what karaoke truly means to people.
Now if you’re looking to bring karaoke to your upcoming party - then this helpful article is for you.
My experience as a professional event party DJ entertainer - with a focus as a Karaoke DJ/Host - spans almost 20 years. In that time, I have seen how karaoke slowly crept its way from the public bar scene into the private party scene here in the NJ/NYC area.
In my younger DJ days, Karaoke took off at the local bars, pubs and restaurants (right around the time the live musician scene began to wither). It was a more cost-effective alternative for bar/restaurant owners who could pay one professional instead of several live musicians, or a solo musician that inevitably has to take a vocal break.
Also, karaoke at the bar meant the patrons could sing - and not just the trained performer up on stage. So, establishments could promote an entire theme night revolved around the karaoke DJ - bringing in more customers through the door to buy food and drinks.
Most of my initial training on how to provide karaoke DJ services and interact with a very present, loud, rowdy, engaged crowd came from the experience I gained in the local bar/restaurant/pub scene.
Here's a video representing the collision of both worlds: the bar scene and the private party realm. A laid-back (yet very reputable and professional) mid-sized company, who hires me for their yearly holiday party at a nice restaurant bar.
They're a fun bunch who really really gets into the karaoke party. By this point, this old dog/seasoned 'pro' has learned a few tricks; and knows how a professional karaoke host/party motivator should handle and interact with a massive crowd. Take a look.
And here's a surprise 40th Birthday Party at the Chart House in Weehawken, NJ who hired my karaoke services performing a group sing-a-long.
These types of environments are all very unique from one another (corporate event functions, weddings, birthday parties, kids parties, Sweet 16s, etc.), and all require a certain style of interacting with the crowd to get (and keep) them engaged. But it’s usually a great time for all.
Naturally, over time, some of the patrons at my karaoke DJ host nights hired my karaoke services for their private parties. And it took off from there. Gradually, the "karaoke night at the local bar" scene gravitated into the private party circuit and we've never looked back. However, from time to time we do provide services for a local karaoke bar night looking to build up a slow night.
3. What is (and how do you hire) a Professional Karaoke DJ / Host?
So now that we covered what a karaoke machine rental is and how karaoke can enhance any type of party, event, celebration or formal function - let’s delve deeper into the role of a professional Karaoke DJ / Host.
First off, not all DJs are Karaoke DJs; but most Karaoke DJs are DJs (it’s in the name). What does this mean?
DJs come in all forms, serving different areas of the entertainment, music and events industry. They can be international celebrities, influencers/tastemakers, creators, educators, music producers, recording artists, performers, or in my case, a local area NJ/NYC event entertainment service provider.
What does it mean to be an event DJ entertainment service provider? It means that clients can contract DJ services for a public or private event (indoor or outdoor), where the DJ typically provides, at minimum: a customized music playlist (consulted with the client) and sound equipment to facilitate the event.
There’s a long list of additional enhancements, services, and features that DJs can provide clients, but that is beyond the scope of this article. You can learn about event party DJs here.
A single operation mobile DJ might offer different features/services than a multi-operation DJ company due to budget, resources, type of events/niche market that they might target - it’s really dependent on what the provider chooses to focus on, or what the current market demands.
A Professional Karaoke DJ/Host essentially wears two hats: that of a DJ and that of a Karaoke Host. Even at the most karaoke-crazed events, where guests seem so sing endlessly, there’s usually a break in the singing which is when an expert Karaoke Host toggles back into ‘DJ-mode’ and is ready if the crowd shows signs of wanting to hit the dance floor and "bust a move".
This is yet another reason why a professional Karaoke DJ/Host is the better option over a karaoke machine rental: you have the added benefit of having a skilled DJ performer than can accommodate your guests’ desire to sing and sudden urge to dance, at a drop of a hat.
How to "hire a Karaoke DJ near me" (and You) is typically a Google search away. However, if you’re interested in Jeron Music Karaoke DJ Party Services, then you can contact us here. We’ll be sure to get back to you ASAP and answer any of your questions.
4. Karaoke DJ Set-up & Equipment
Another added benefit of going the route of hiring a professional Karaoke DJ/Host (instead of the rental or purchase of a karaoke machine), is the array of high-quality equipment that the service provider brings.
I can’t vouch for all Karaoke DJs out there (a DJ’s gear preferences are as sacred as the clubs a golfer chooses), but most DJs invest lots of money into buying mobile, portable, sturdy, high-quality, long-lasting equipment, that can withstand the years of moving it in and out, down up and stairs, from one venue location to another.
In addition, digital technology has eliminated many of the antiquated forms of music collections that typically needed to be transported in boxes or crates - so that makes set-up and transport of equipment far easier.
By "antiquated", I’m referring to CD’s, tapes, and vinyl records (if you are old enough to remember any of these physical mediums, then you, and your backside, are thankful for the invention of the digital .mp3 file).
And or course, there's the mobile computer, which can conveniently hold thousands of digital music files, all in one laptop - eliminating the need for transporting crates of records or cd disc books.
[Note: some modern day DJs do choose to go ‘old school’ by utilizing vinyl records and turntables for a more vintage feel/look/sound - and that’s totally 100% fine, too. In recent years, vinyl has had a renaissance with many older records being sought after by vintage fans; record companies re-issuing older albums as part of new compilations or specialty packaging; and some modern day artists actually doing a limited press of a current release of their albums (in addition to making them available on the more popular digital streaming/store platforms like Spotify, Apple Music, etc.)].
Again, every DJ’s set-up and equipment is as unique to them as a person’s Netflix queue of shows they’re currently watching, so we’ll draw upon our own set-up at Jeron Music DJ, Karaoke, Photo Booth Rental, Live Music Entertainment.
As you can see from the picture above, I utilize a four foot table with a black scrim (DJ’s table cloth) as my ‘DJ station’ - which holds my DJ Denon mixer and controller, MacBook laptop, and Shure wireless microphone receiver/transmitter.
Adjacent to that is another table, identical to the DJ table, which holds the karaoke equipment: the TV screens, wireless karaoke microphones, karaoke song books, and karaoke sign-up sheets.
And just in case you missed it: two pictures back, that white tower behind me, towards the back of that space is our modern Open-Air Photo Booth Rental Experience.
Another benefit of hiring professionals with high-quality mobile equipment is that it typically fits in tight spaces/corners. This is a plus because we're sometimes not given much space at certain venues to begin with. Having mobile equipment allows us to position all the entertainment attractions in one corner (reasonably spaced) of the venue room - even with the Photo Booth. You can learn more about our Photo Booth Rental NJ NYC experience here.
That secondary black table not only holds the karaoke equipment, but also acts as the “karaoke stage” where guests can come around and sing from behind the table, to read the lyrics appearing on the screen.
More importantly, it acts a focal point where the other guests can direct their attention, creating a sense of a stage-like experience, making the person singing feel like they’re on an episode of American Idol or The Voice.
Here’s the professional presentation setup when it all comes together...
5. Karaoke for Weddings
We wanted to devote a section specifically to weddings, and how karaoke can enhance them, because it’s an entirely unique party celebration in and of itself. So here goes…
When you think of a “wedding”, you think of obvious things such as: wedding reception, wedding ceremony, bride, grooms, first dance, etc.
When you think of “wedding entertainment”, usually what comes to mind is: Wedding DJ or Wedding Live Music.
But most people don’t think wedding AND Karaoke DJ. Well think again.
After years of bringing our Karaoke DJ/Host experience to a variety of events, one day a wonderful engaged couple, Gina and Mike, reached out to us, saying they would be getting married soon.
(Here’s a picture of the lovely couple posing for our interactive modern photo booth rental experience - which they hired us for in addition to wedding karaoke DJ services)
While they hired a live cover band to provide live music entertainment for their huge wedding reception, they wanted to do something special for a smaller intimate group of family of friends who would remain after the reception.
Enter the Wedding AFTER-Party. The notion was foreign to me at the time, but it totally made sense once they shared their vision: they wanted to end their wedding day on a high note.
Recognizing that a wedding, at times throughout the day, can be stressful, long, and pressure-filled for those involved (but always magical and celebratory), they wanted to ensure that the last portion would focused on F-U-N. So, enter the Wedding After-Party Karaoke DJ/Host Experience.
The set-up, operation and break-down of the equipment is not much different than any other of our general party events. Since the couple hired us for both our Photo Booth Rental and Karaoke DJ Services, we prefer to place all the entertainment attractions together against one wall or corner. We find this is the best way to maximize the event space, leaving more space for guests, the bar and dance floor.
What IS different is that the guests are already (as we say in the biz) ‘warmed up’ and ready to P-A-R-T-Y! So, it doesn’t take much coaxing the crowd to get them to sign up for their favorite songs - they are ready to sing; and sing they do. (see the video above of the Bride and Groom do a live karaoke rendition of the Beastie Boys' "Paul Revere" - it's crazy good!)
Weddings definitely possess a different energy than, say, a Sweet 16 or corporate function. At the risk of sounding mushy (but I am a hopeless romantic after all), you can always feel a heaping amount of love and happiness coursing through the room; emanating from all the family and friends who gathered to celebrate the happy couple.
So that energy just further heightens the Karaoke DJ Experience. I interact better with the crowd and they just sing their hearts out, like if they were performing to a sold-out show at Madison Square Garden. It makes my job that much more gratifying.
More importantly, it ensures EVERYONE has an amazing time.
In conclusion, if you’re planning any type of event and are looking to liven up things, consider hiring a Karaoke DJ/Host, with a fully modern karaoke equipment set-up (and avoid the hassle and stress of a karaoke machine rental).
Wherever you are in the world reading this blog post, you can search on the internet for local karaoke DJ services near you to find entertainers in your area.
